My name is John Rolfe. I am from England, but was given a task from King James to bring the Indian Chief from Jamestown back to London.

Was Thomas popular?  Jane had no idea.  ”This is my first time, as well,” she agreed.  ”Mr. Ballard described his house to me, but it sounds like all of the others!  Have you a lot on your mind?  I hadn’t noticed,” she said politely.  ”You seem very self-possessed to me.”

“Oh, well if I see him around, I’ll be sure to let you know.” He smiled. “Oh, well thank you.” Then John raised his eyebrows. “You’re friends with one of the indians?”

“Yes,” said Jane firmly, nettled by his obvious surprise.  Mr. Rolfe didn’t need to know the details of Jane’s tenuous friendship with the young woman.  ”Pocahontas.  One of the best and bravest people I know.  And many people I know would agree.”

“Oh. I met one the other day, actually. Very strange. She acted as though she didn’t want me there.”

“Gracious, you met an Indian who didn’t take kindly to a white settler?” Jane laughed, unable to resist sarcasm.  ”Mr. Rolfe, would you take kindly to people who settled your land without asking?”

John didn’t particularly like her sarcasm. “Yes, I know. I get it. My apologies.”

Pocahontas stared at the man who walked into the Indian village. She was confused about why there as a settler there. The settlers barely ever visited the village. She walked closer to the man, observing his features. His facial expression seemed a bit confused…

“It’s erm, nice to meet you John Rolfe. John’s a pretty common name in England, yes?” She asked. Pocahontas raised an eyebrow, wondering why the man would want to talk to her father. Instead of telling him where the chief was she asked him another question. “And why must you speak to the chief? Is there a problem?” She crossed her arms and looked at him.

“I suppose so, yes.” John cleared his throat. “I was sent here by King James to speak to the Indian Chief and to possibly have him join us in London to make negotiations in order to prevent a war between the natives and the englishmen.” He hoped it had all come out the way he wanted it to, the last thing he wanted to do was offend them.

“No, I meant, my husband is good friends with a man who lives here in Jamestown.  Thomas Ballard,” explained Jane patiently.  ”Mr. Ballard and my husband John Smith were members of the Virginia Company that originally settled this land.  I was going to pay Mr. Ballard a visit and ask him to direct me towards the Indian village, because I have an Indian friend.”

“Uh huh. This Thomas fellow must be pretty popular. Someone else has already told me about him.” He raised his eyebrows. “Is this your first visit to Jamestown as well? Welcome!” He smiled. “Sorry if I seem a bit out of it. I’ve just got a lot on my mind, is all.”
